The citizens of Prince Edward Island have long been involved in crime prevention and community safety.
The Department of Justice and Public Safety oversees a wide range of programs and activities in the areas of Justice, Public Safety, and Consumer and Corporate Services. Each of the eight divisions of the Department works toward the betterment of society by fostering safe communities, access to justice, and respect for the law. Community Legal Information Association of PEI (CLIA-PEI) is a non-profit registered charity. They provide information, referrals, and support to Islanders on legal issues. CLIA undertakes projects funded by various foundations, government departments, or other funding sources to meet the needs of the community. Most of CLIAs projects and initiatives are possible because of ongoing partnerships with government, community groups and other organizations. The Mi`Kmaq Confederacy of Prince Edward Island (MCPEI) is a not-for-profit Tribal Council and Provincial Territorial Organization (PTO) governed by a Board of Directors consisting of the Band Councils from Lennox Island and Abegweit First Nations. MCPEI promotes knowledge and understanding of Mi`Kmaq rights by conducting research, developing and implementing initiatives and building relationships necessary to resolve issues in a cooperative manner. PEI Partners for Community Safety represent key sectors including community not-for profit, Aboriginal justice, police, provincial government, federal government, and communities of interest (i.e. seniors).
