2011 Conference A Great Learning Event!

On May 4th, the 25th Annual Crime Prevention Conference in Halifax, Nova Scotia kicked off with a fun 'meet and greet' at Alexander Keith's Brewery. Actors in historic costumes regaled participants with tales of Halifax's historic brewery, and even persuaded a few to sing along with some lively Celtic songs!

Thursday, May 5th was a full day of workshops and plenary presentations, including school and police collaboration, threat assessment in schools, working effectively with Aboriginal people, and crime prevention through environmental design, all of which focused on the conference theme: Safe Schools, Strong Communities: A Crime Prevention Approach.

A lovely banquet was held, and guest speakers included the Honorable Ross Landry, Minister of Justice Nova Scotia, as well as the Honorable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence. During the banquet, attendees were entertained by two very talented Celtic dancers, Cassie and Maggie MacDonald.

The Province of Nova Scotia Minister's leadership awards in crime prevention were presented to recognize exemplary efforts in crime prevention. The ACSA is proud to note that one of its own members, Ken Macdonald, received an award in the policing category. Congratulations, Ken! The Shirlen Seamone award was also presented to Brian Godfrey for his commitment to community safety in Nova Scotia.

The conference came to a close on Friday, May 6th and featured another informative plenary and several more stimulating workshops that focused on the intersection between safe schools and strong communities.

Conference attendees stated that they learned a great deal, and enjoyed the experience immensely, indicating a successful knowledge transfer event.

Next year's conference will be held in Newfoundland & Labrador and planning is already underway. Details of this exciting 2012 event are available at http://acc-cca.org/en/index.php/en/conference/26th_annual_acc_conference/
